TOP 10 Friday the 13th Archive Notes

Today marks another of those calendar interventions we have come to know as a Friday the 13th.

While some pay little attention to the symbolic significance of this periodic occurrence, there are many who do. The fact that this is a year wherein it occurs the same month as Halloween adds some dimension to the spectre; forebodingly, it’s a superstitious lead-in to the history imbued time, combining fear and celebration at the end of October. Even More Breaking News

Here’s some BREAKING NEWS:

This week’s post is a follow-up to interest piquing submission last Friday.

More BREAKING NEWS

Many a video news channel these days is quick to interject a “BREAKING NEWS” graphic whenever a borderline opportunity strikes, let alone more legitimate, dramatic happenings.

What this means for the viewer is that, too often, the interjection refers either to an embellished, regurgitated story, or one of esoteric, nebulous import, perhaps cliché style. (more…)

Common Experiences, Not for Everyone

Currently, in the Ottawa, Ontario area, midsummer weather has returned with a vengeance.

After most of this summer being of a relatively moderate mode, with concomitant complaints from those who prefer more opportunity to fry their skin, in the last week of the season and beyond we have hit a heat wave, which any prolonged period in mid summer would be proud of. Running several degrees above normal, both daytime and evening, it just goes on, getting even hotter, but more significantly more humid. (more…)

TOP 10 Life Lessons from TWIN PEAKS – The Return

For those inspired by the more outré versions of TV programming, ‘TWIN PEAKS’ has represented one of the iconic lynchpins (or, perhaps more accurately, Lynch-pins). It has displayed a chunk of the world with unique, somewhat relatable, people operating from ethical codes which supported their behaviour in bizarre events and developments.

The dream-like atmosphere around the eccentric characters in the original 1990s series was enhanced by a haunting, hypnotic music score. (more…)

TOP 10 Ways to Survive Waiting at Airports

Anyone who has traveled by air in recent times, and particularly has done so off and on for decades, knows how the experience has dwindled in enjoyability. Nowadays it seems to go down a notch every year.

Have you seen the original version of the movie, “The Out-of-Towners”? Soon into the opening scene, Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis, having made the short drive in their station wagon from home to the local airport, easily stride into the casual, small terminal, directly to the ticket counter, and quickly out to board their plane, with nary a whiff of delay or security to be seen. How times have changed… (more…)

The Karma / Janus Connection

The expression that there are two sides to just about anything applies, in many peoples’ anecdotal experience, to karma.

What is karma?

Stemming from east Asian religions, karma relates to the culmination of a person’s actions in life (potentially added to by one’s previous ‘states of existence’) impacting, or even deciding, one’s fate moving forward. More simply, karma = destiny, or fate, as influenced by one’s actions. (more…)

Life Lessons from BETTER CALL SAUL

The third ten-episodes season of ‘Better Call Saul’ has just concluded, a series in part prequel to one of AMC’s most popular previous runs, ‘Breaking Bad’. Thanks to the pedigree of the contiguous writers/producers, as events evolve the ripples are gradually connecting.

The most significant thread is the character currently known as Jimmie McGill, but who is slowly turning into ‘Better Call’ Saul Goodman. Jimmy’s manifesting a morally flawed character from the beginning, viewing his adventures attempting a deviant level of success is not unlike watching a slow train wreck. (more…)

TOP 10 Esoteric Father’s Day Gifts

This coming Sunday brings about another Father’s Day.

As many of us know, especially men who are fathers, this day historically takes a back seat to Mother’s Day on the recognition, celebration radar.

That’s not necessarily bad; after all the fuss and commotion concomitant with Mother’s Day, parents not having to go through a similar scenario only a month or so later can feel less of an ordeal, as long as dads can roll with the lower profile. (more…)
